The Basilica of Saint Euphemia, located in the picturesque setting of Campo dei Patriarchi in the “old town” of Grado, is a gem of early Christian buildings that shines in its ancient glory.
Next to the basilica, you will find the distinctive weathervane of the fifteenth-century bell tower, dominated by the figure of the Angel Saint Michael, symbol of Grado. Around it stand other monuments of rare beauty, such as the Baptistery, the Lapidary and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Grazie, the oldest in the city.
The roots of the basilica go back in time: already in the 4th century there was the “little basilica of Petrus”, on which Niceta began the construction of a new church in the early years of the 5th century. The complex was then completed in 579 by Bishop Elias, who established his residence in Grado. Elias dedicated the basilica to the protomartyrs of Aquileia, Hermagoras, Fortunatus and Euphemia (martyr of Chalcedon), thus emphasizing the adherence of the Church of Aquileia to the anti-Arian resolutions of the Council of Chalcedon.
The interior of the basilica is distinguished by its three naves supported by columns with elegant capitals, which hold up the arches and create an atmosphere of solemnity and majesty.
